PS151K Nest Program

PS151K Nest Program

We are excited to share a unique and inclusive program designed to support all students—both neurodiverse and neurotypical—right here in our community. At PS151K in Bushwick, Brooklyn, our NEST (Neighborhood, Education, Social Skills, and Teamwork) classes offer a safe, welcoming space for children on the Autism Spectrum alongside their peers in General Education. Our goal is to provide an environment where all students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally, at their own pace and potential.

What is the NEST Program?

The NEST program is built around the idea of micro-integration, where a small group of students—4 children on the Autism Spectrum and 8-12 children from General Education—are supported by two dedicated educators: one General Education teacher and one Special Education teacher. This allows for individualized attention and fosters a collaborative environment where students of all abilities can thrive.

A Supportive Learning Environment

The NEST classes are designed to provide a balance of academic learning and social-emotional growth. Social Development Intervention (SDI) is an evidence-based program led by speech therapists and supported by classroom teachers, designed to teach students social skills and help them navigate the social world with confidence. This program is rooted in the principles of neurodiversity, aiming to create a classroom where all communication styles are respected and valued.

Social Development Intervention (SDI)

SDI is a key component of the NEST program. It goes beyond traditional social skills training by helping students:

  • Understand social expectations and norms

  • Develop authentic communication skills

  • Learn self-advocacy techniques

  • Build relationships based on mutual interests

This program encourages authentic peer engagement and gives students the opportunity to practice social communication in a supportive, low-pressure environment. What’s more, SDI sessions often integrate students' special interests, which not only makes learning more engaging but also encourages stronger social connections.

Curriculum & Integration

The beauty of the NEST program is that it aligns with the same curriculum as all other PS151K classrooms, meaning students in NEST classes participate in all grade-level activities, field trips, and school events. This ensures that children have opportunities to connect with the larger school community and take part in the same experiences as their peers.

Key Benefits of NEST Classes for Families:

  • Academic Growth: Students receive instruction based on the same standards as their general education peers.

  • Social Skills Development: Through SDI, students learn and practice social skills in a real-world setting.

  • Emotional Support: With a team of dedicated educators, students are given the tools to regulate emotions and advocate for their needs.

  • Community Engagement: NEST students actively participate in school-wide events, promoting inclusivity and creating lasting friendships.

  • Neuro Affirming Approach: Every student’s unique learning and communication style is recognized and respected, fostering a sense of belonging and self-worth

A Partnership with Parents

At the heart of our program is a partnership with parents. We understand the importance of family involvement in a child’s educational journey. Our team works closely with families to provide ongoing support, communicate progress, and share strategies for fostering success both in and outside the classroom.

If you are a parent in Bushwick or the surrounding area, and you’re interested in learning more about NEST classes or how your child can participate, we invite you to reach out to our Parent Coordinator Nilsa Figueroa.
